| Abstract | Full synonymy is given, and the history of each name is separately discussed. A redescription is given based on new material, with notes on other specimens. The sp. is known to occur definitely only in the tropical western Atlantic from Brazil to southern Florida and Bermuda, and all the nominal forms from this region belong to the same sp. Osorio's records from off west Africa may apply to this sp., but Linnaeus' designation of European waters as the type locality is incorrect, as no such reference is found in Willugh-beii, on whose account and figure Linnaeus' description was based.
