| Abstract | Serranid fishes of the nominal genera, Serranus, Serranellus, Paracentropristes, Mentiperca and Prionodes are reviewed. Treatment is comprehensive for Western North Atlantic species, two of which (Serranus chionaraia and S. mavtagi) are described as new, but only the type species of various genera are considered from other regions, and these in less detail. Discussion of habits, habitat and other features are discussed as data permit. Synonymies are given for Western Atlantic species and photographs and a key to their identifications are provided. The monotypic genus Schultzea and a new Atlantic species of Plectranthias are also discussed. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: Authors
